Kyiv-based artist Vic Bakin presents Materia, a delicate exploration of photography as matter, the follow-up to his award-winning first monograph Epitome.
Following Epitome, which looked outward at the effects of war on people and landscape, Materia turns inward, exploring instability within photography itself. Produced during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the project shifts its attention from what photography depicts to the material from which photographs are made.
Vic Bakin (Viktor Bakin, b. 1984) is a self-educated Ukrainian photographer and artist based in Kyiv, Ukraine. His work focuses primarily on documenting Ukrainian youth and, more recently, on themes surrounding the war in Ukraine. His practice moves between portraiture, conceptual photography, and darkroom printing, exploring youth, subcultures, and material presence. He lives and works in Kyiv, Ukraine.
